Governor Kemp’s New Orders

- Kristin Skelly
What Does That Mean for THS

"In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers."

Mr. Fred Rogers

As many of you know, Governor Kemp announced the reopening of several businesses in Georgia beginning this Friday, April 24th. Since his announcement, I have heard from parents, teachers, and students about how the Governor’s announcement affects us as a school- “Can we reopen now?” “Does this mean graduation is on?”, “Can we come to the school and use the weight room now?” The short answer to that question is- “I don’t know. We need to wait and see.”

I think we are all looking for any sign that things could be back to normal soon. And maybe the Governor’s willingness to open gyms, salons, restaurants, and theaters is the first sign that other businesses- like schools will also reopen soon. But we need to wait and see.

I know this is not the answer many of you want- but I think it would be unwise for us to make a firm decision on anything at this point. It is okay for us to keep looking at a number of different scenarios for all the activities we are longing to celebrate- graduation, Honor’s Day, prom, 8th grade retreat, 4th grade and 8th grade step up, Jubilee- with the understanding that this situation has the ability to change day by day. How our fellow citizens approach this reopening will dictate if the “curve” continues to decline or it if becomes a larger problem.

We have to remember that we are a community. As a community it is important for us to understand that when we make decisions, we have to consider everyone who is a part of that community. Grandparents are a part of our community. Students and faculty members with compromised immune systems are part of our community. Family members with underlying conditions are part of our community. We must move forward with our decisions with our COMMUNITY in mind.

Keep doing all the great things you have been doing- social distance, wash your hands, stay home if you are sick, cover your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze, wipe down surfaces. It is important that we keep doing ALL these things!

So, I commit to you that we will continue to remain positive and look for every silver lining we can possibly find. We will have our special celebrations and they will be wonderful. As soon as we can safely come together as a community, we will. I promise.

My main priority will always be to keep you safe- in every way.

Please keep your questions coming. That is what I’m here for- I may not always have the answer, but I will try my best.

All the best,

Kristin Skelly
