Service Learning

Community service and service learning opportunities are fundamental to the social and emotional development of the students at The Heritage School. Beginning in the Early Learning Center and culminating in their senior year, students engage in various projects throughout their time at Heritage. Collecting monthly donations for a local food pantry, working with CORRAL, Coweta Samaritan Clinic, Habitat for Humanity, Key Club, or coaching Youth Sports Camps are means by which students learn about the mutual benefit that service to others provides.

Beyond the lifelong value of giving, the process itself teaches a student valuable skills.

As an example, Fourth Grade students participate in a “Pajamas and Books” program in partnership with Scholastic Books. For each pair of pajamas the children and School donate, Scholastic provides a book to go with the pajamas. Locally, books and pajamas are distributed through One Roof, an organization for families in need.

In order to fund the purchase of pajamas, our Fourth Graders make a snack mix which they sell during Break time to Middle and Upper School students. The local Kohl's store has graciously hosted our Fourth Grade shoppers for the past two years. There, they are divided into shopping groups and provided the money from the snack mix sales to buy pajamas. There is much figuring and decision-making that takes place in the purchasing of the pajamas. It’s exciting, to say the least, as students make buying decisions down to their last penny and then deliver the pajamas to One Roof.

These early service learning opportunities provide the framework for schoolwide projects completely organized and executed by Upper School students. In conjunction with all Division Heads and service groups across campus, our older students have coordinated year-long service learning experiences that include a walk to raise awareness for Multiple Sclerosis and this year's intiative for Stop Hunger Now.

As a school, we are proud of our connections to the community and of our students' ongoing service to it. Truly, it is a dynamic in which everyone wins.
