I had a random thought today as I was running errands. I was able to pick up groceries and a Target order, go to the bank, go through Chick-fil-A drive-thru, and have minimal contact with other people. In total, I came in contact with three people. The only things I said were, "Hey" and "Thank you so much! I appreciate you"! Might I remind you I only needed to say these things three times because I only came in contact with three people! OH MY!
I'm used to talking to people every day and having interactions with others consistently. Currently, my only physical contact is with my little family of three.
Then, a different thought crossed my mind: Are we going to have to relearn social skills? (I certainly hope not!) The following are some necessary social skills we may not use during our quarantine life, but are very important as we transition back into society:
1. Always have good manners.
2. Say please and thank you.
3. Make eye contact with others.
4. Speak up - no mumbling allowed.
5. Speak to others with confidence.
6. Put devices away to have face to face interactions.
7. Understand personal space (it may look different).
8. Ask people questions and genuinely listen to their answers.
9. Listen. Be patient. Do not interrupt.
10. Be gracious to others as well as yourself.
Everyone, including yourself, will have a time of adjustment when we transition back into everyday "normal" society. Things will look and be different, but we have the chance to make this transition an enjoyable experience for everyone. With our sharpened social skills, we will continue to make this world a beautiful place!
